Whiplash Care in San Francisco
Whiplash is a neck sprain or strain associated with rapid back-and-forth movement, often during a vehicle collision. Neck pain may be only one part of the picture, and symptoms after an impact should be assessed in the context of possible head, spine, or other injuries. Ocean Chiropractic Center offers individualized conservative care only after appropriate screening. We make no promise about recovery time, insurance, or legal outcomes.
Symptoms are a starting point, not a diagnosis. This guide explains patterns an evaluation may consider and the changes that should not wait for a routine visit.
Symptoms can appear on different timelines
People may notice neck pain or stiffness, reduced motion, headache, upper-back or shoulder discomfort, fatigue, dizziness, or sleep disruption. Arm tingling, numbness, or weakness may indicate nerve involvement. Some symptoms begin promptly; others become more noticeable later as activity resumes.
Delayed discomfort does not prove hidden permanent damage, and a low-speed collision does not allow anyone to calculate your injury from vehicle speed alone. Symptoms are not a diagnosis. Medical and physical findings—not fear-based claims—should guide care.
Screen first, then plan
After a collision, emergency or medical evaluation takes priority when the impact, symptoms, or health history warrants it. A non-emergency musculoskeletal evaluation may review the event, head or body impact, symptom progression, prior conditions, medication, and changes in work or daily activities.
The examination may assess comfortable neck motion, strength, sensation, reflexes, coordination, and nearby areas. Imaging is considered based on clinical criteria rather than promised as part of every visit. Concussion or other injury concerns prompt medical referral.
Existing emergency or primary-care instructions remain important. Bring reports through the clinic’s approved secure process if requested, and tell the clinician about anticoagulants, prior surgery, osteoporosis, or other factors that may change risk. A chiropractic visit should add to a coherent care plan, not duplicate or contradict needed medical follow-up.
Conservative care based on irritability and findings
When chiropractic care is appropriate, early recommendations may emphasize comfortable movement, symptom-guided activity, and selected gentle hands-on care. Exercise and daily-load guidance may progress as tolerance changes. A technique that is reasonable later may not be appropriate in an acutely irritable presentation.
Some patients need medication, physical therapy, imaging, or specialist care. We support coordination and do not characterize those options as merely “masking” symptoms. No treatment can guarantee that pain will not persist.
Recovery is individual
Whiplash-associated symptoms vary in severity and duration. Progress is better discussed through function—such as sleep, turning the head, driving comfort, and work tolerance—than through a promised number of visits. If symptoms worsen, neurological findings emerge, or progress does not fit expectations, the plan should be reassessed.

Emergency signs after a collision
Call 911 for loss of consciousness, worsening severe headache, repeated vomiting, seizure, confusion, unusual drowsiness, slurred speech, unequal pupils, major weakness or numbness, chest or abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing. New loss of coordination, inability to walk safely, or severe spinal pain after significant trauma also needs urgent medical evaluation.
